Child Support
licensed to practice in virginia and the district of columbia
Child support is the monetary obligation ordered by a Court to ensure the financial support necessary for raising a child is provided. Parents have a legal duty to support their minor children, though the age to which child support can be ordered varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. In most instances, the amount of child support is determined by a formula approved by the legislature of a jurisdiction.
In general, the formula produces a “guideline” child support number based on the relative incomes of the parties as well as who is paying what for certain other expenses incurred for the children. When a family in DC has a combined income that exceeds the guidelines, Courts will often look to what the reasonable needs of the children are recognizing that this a family of some affluence.
