The basis or “grounds” on which a Court may grant a divorce differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. For example, various forms of marital fault can be grounds for divorce in Virginia while in the District of Columbia, they are not. In most circumstances, some period of separation between the parties is required before a divorce can occur.
